Angelica essential oil
Angelica archangelica
Angelica essential oil and Angelica plant (Angelica archangelica), also known as garden angelica or archangel root, is a medicinal herb belonging to the celery family (Apiaceae). Native to Siberia and Iceland, it also grows in China and northern parts of Europe. Both the leaves and roots of angelica contain essential oils, which have been used for centuries in various herbal remedies. However, fresh angelica can cause irritation and blistering on sensitive skin, and the raw root may be toxic if ingested.
Angelica essential oil is often referred to as the “oil of the angels,” thanks to its potent calming, balancing, and deeply relaxing properties. It is also associated with St. Michael’s Day (May 8), which coincides with its flowering period. Beyond its soothing effects on the mind, angelica is traditionally recognized as a natural antispasmodic and pain reliever.
In addition to these uses, angelica root has played an important role in both culinary and medicinal applications across different cultures. Its aromatic qualities make it a common ingredient in liqueurs like Benedictine or Chartreuse, while herbalists have long valued its potential benefits for digestion and circulation. Historically, angelica was even believed to ward off evil spirits, leading to its use in various protective folk remedies. Today, angelica essential oil remains a favorite among aromatherapy enthusiasts, perfumers, and herbal medicine practitioners for its complex, herbaceous scent and versatile therapeutic properties.
