Aroma Note

Glossary

An aroma note describes how an aromatic material behaves in a blend, especially whether it is noticed quickly, forms the body of the blend, or lasts longer as a deeper base.

What Aroma Note Means

In natural perfumery and aromatic blending, oils are often described as top, middle, or base notes. Top notes are usually lighter and faster to evaporate. Middle notes form the heart of a blend. Base notes are slower, deeper, and longer-lasting.

Why It Matters

Aroma notes help make blends feel balanced. A blend with only fast citrus top notes may smell bright but fade quickly. A blend with only heavy base notes may feel dense. Combining top, middle, and base notes can create more depth and structure.

Example in Essential Oil Use

Lemon is usually treated as a top note, lavender as a middle note, and cedarwood atlas as a base note. Together, they can create a simple blend with brightness, body, and grounding.
